CARICOM Secretariat partners with Guyana for Girls in ICT Day

The CARICOM Secretariat, in collaboration with the Guyana Ministry of Education and other partners, will host a number of activities in Guyana from April 28– 29, 2016, to celebrate Girls in ICT.

Among the activities that will be held are workshops on ICT related topics, Open/Career Day at various public and private sector locations, television and radio features on women and girls in ICTs, panel discussions and exhibitions.

Measures to accelerate the development of women and girls in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be the focus of these events which will be held under the theme: ‘Tech girls, for a tech world. Girls and women in ICT; beneficial for every country!’  

Several regions in Guyana will be engaged in activities to mark the day. Additionally, some Member States of the Caribbean Community will conduct various activities to commemorate the occasion.

Patrons have already been identified for the Girls in ICT event. These include Deputy Secretary-General of the CARICOM Secretariat, Her Excellency Manorma Soeknandan PhD, Minister within the Ministry of Education, the Hon. Nicolette Henry, and Minister of Public Telecommunication, the Hon. Catherine Hughes.

Other CARICOM Secretariat partners in this initiative include the Ministry of Public Telecommunications – EGovernment Unit and the National Frequency Management Unit, the University of Guyana– Centre for Communication Studies and Department of Computer Studies. The CARICOM Youth Ambassadors will also be integrally involved in the proceedings.

International Girls in ICT Day is an initiative from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of April, under the theme: ‘Expand Horizons, Changing Attitudes’.  It aims to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in ICTs.
